Before Taking an At-Home Abortion Pill

Prior to taking the abortion pills, it is vital that you see a medical provider, in person, during a private appointment. A medical provider can prevent or diagnose complications before taking the abortion pill.1,2,3

Schedule an appointment with your medical provider or visit a free and confidential women’s center that will help you learn more about your options.4

Medication abortion (also called the abortion pill, MifeprexTm) is FDA approved for up to 70 days (10 weeks pregnant) after the start of your last menstrual period.

  • The “pill” is actually a protocol that involves taking two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, which are taken in two separate doses on different days.
  • It is not available through a pharmacy, but is only available by an authorized provider.
  • The FDA strongly cautions against the use of mifepristone obtained over the Internet.5
  • Because of complications, the FDA keeps close track.5
  • The abortion pills are different from emergency contraception, sometimes called the “morning-after pill”.
  • For women who change their minds after taking just the mifepristone, it may be possible to rescue the pregnancy. Learn more: The Abortion Pill Reversal.

Self-Induced Abortion

A self-induced abortion (also called a self-managed abortion, or sometimes a self-induced miscarriage) is an abortion performed by the pregnant woman herself, or with the help of other, non-medical assistance. Although the term includes abortions induced outside of a clinical setting with legal, sometimes over-the-counter medication, it also refers to efforts to terminate a pregnancy through alternative, potentially more dangerous methods.6Abortions have been attempted using herbal medicines, sharp tools, forceful massage, or through other methods. Toxic reactions and even death have been reported.6

FREE ULTRASOUND EXAM

It’s important to confirm your pregnancy before considering an at-home abortion method. A positive pregnancy test (including those taken at home) suggests a high probability that you’re pregnant. However, the result should be confirmed. By getting an ultrasound you can learn more about your pregnancy and find out if you even need an abortion and if so, what type of abortion procedure you would require.

Save yourself time and money. All of our services are free and confidential, regardless of financial circumstances. We exist to provide accurate medical information and support to women and men facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Learn how far along you are

A medication abortion could be very dangerous for you if your pregnancy is further along than you know. You shouldn’t attempt a medical abortion if you’ve been pregnant for more than nine weeks (after the start of your last period). Some types of medical abortion aren’t done after seven weeks of pregnancy.7

Whether or not your pregnancy is located in the uterus

If the pregnancy is ectopic (in which your pregnancy is progressing in the wrong part of your body), you will require immediate medical treatment.8

Find out if your pregnancy is viable

About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is likely higher because many miscarriages occur very early in pregnancy.9
